Bubbles and Saint Paul's

In this area of the site, I feature three photographs - which will change from time to time - in greater detail, to explain a little more about how and why I took them.

Bubbles and Saint Paul's

This is an absolutely "straight" image, so where did the bubbles come from? They came from a very large "bubble blower" several feet across, which works exactly the same way as the simple childhood "blowing bubbles" technique. It's part of London's South Bank entertainment scene, along with musicians, pavement artists, human statues, etc, so most people are watching the entertainer and the bubbles he creates, rather than the effect on their surroundings. Remove the bubbles and this is a fairly ordinary picture (although St Paul's Cathedral can never be exactly "ordinary"). With the bubbles it becomes something slightly other-wordly and surprising.

Stone at Sunrise

The most unusual thing about this picture was probably the time it was taken, around 6am. Even as a keen photographer, I find a 5.30am start to my day a little daunting, and rarely attempt it, especially since I retired from "proper work". However, when staying on the Northumbria coast at Alnmouth, the promise of a late summer sunrise was worth it, I think. I took a few shots, but I liked this one best because the small stone, with a play of both light and water on it, filled an otherwise uninteresting foreground, and provided a balance to the striking sunrise.

Underground Sale

Underground Sale

I suspect that many people will miss the point of this picture (or see the point and raise their eyes at my strange sense of humour!) I was in central London, waiting to meet people for a Street Photography workshop, so I had my camera in Oxford Street, a place that might not be most people's first choice for photos. It was early Sunday morning, with few people around. I wish I could remember exactly how I lined this up, but there must be an element of "reflections-of-reflections". I just liked the idea of a cut-price sale at, or even of, a tube station.
